two rolls of pictures turned out looking a bit wonky (yup, including a lot of those taken on that super hot and walk-too-much day). so i took a third roll using cheapish negatives to prove that it could not be my umbrella causing the funny black tint over a third of the picture - and it's not.
long story short, after some minor fiddling, it should be okay now. but am not putting in that precious last roll of kodak ektachrome until i'm sure. still not too happy that the second last roll was wasted over such a silly matter.
