Bought the Near Equal DVD series on contemporary Japanese artists on one of my Taiwan/Eslite trips and finally got around to watching them all.
While naturally interested in the Moriyama Daido documentary (full version can be found on YouTube, actually) and utterly fascinated by how deliciously odd Kusama Yayoi is, I was most taken by the one about Funakoshi Katsura.
A silent and, ah, functional video of an exhibition showcasing more recent works.
His sculptures are arresting (lots of pictures plonked together on this blog) and the drawings he makes beforehand of them equally beautiful. That he is rather charismatic and as a subject, humourous and reveals just enough of himself to leave you wanting more, also makes for good viewing.
He and his work were also featured in this gorgeous Shiseido Men TVC. You can see quite a few drawings in this.
It's been a few days since I watched the documentary and the gently lopsided gaze of that sculpture is still in my head. What I like, I think, is the softness of his sculptures' gazes. And how gentle they feel despite their dignified and in some, aristocratic bearings. Lifelike but without the dull weight of being human, if that makes any sense.
Shall have to visit our stellar Lee Kong Chian Reference Library to find out more/ flip through pictures (because when it comes to images, it's still paper > digital).
