After looking at me snap away for a while, the uncle came to tell me that there was a beautiful alley nearby. He then led me to this and before he went back to do his job (blocking off roadside parking lots with stools and and directing cars into them), he told me that directors have come for a shot of this alley and a famous French artist had done a painting.
Some day soon, I need to go back for a better shot.

This looks like a painting still!
agrees with L. lovely lovely lovely.
I was too close. That peeling blue on the front wall is gorgeous, and the arch above the entryway is covered with that. When you stand further back, the alley looks longer, narrower, almost infinite. And it was dead quiet but not in a creepy way. I tried to get more of that with another picture, but very underexposed (Holga). So this is the only one I have.
hello! i'm a reader of your blog.. do u mind sharing where is this location/ road? I used to live in malacca and this street looks faintly familiar. returning there for cny, hope to check out this little lane, if you dun mind sharing. cheers.
Hello, I'd love to tell you exactly where but erm, I didn't take down an address.
I was walking towards Jonker area from Majestic Malacca hotel. This alley is along a row of shophouses that have been boarded up.
I was along the river, at the foot of a particular bridge. There is a small bustling coffee shop there, and a shop selling birds just a few steps away.
If you can find this, this alley is nearby. The uncle directing cars into parking lots was the one who led me there.
Sorry, this is all I've got. Hope it helps! Next time I'll remember to take down a street name.
hmm, i should think i can find this mysterious alley from the description below. jonker street is where i grew up at :) if i find out the street name,i'd let u know :)
going towards jonker, this is the part of the river that is before st francis church, before that big road junction which is in front of some bar/cafe establishment with green signages all over their premises, before the sign on the wall that indicates "these are dutch bricks".
the coffee shop is at the end of a tiny one-car-lane road. flanking the road are many old school barbers, a very interesting bar which was configured exactly like a posh hotel bar except the stools were red plastic ones and it was nestled in a shophouse. it looked old but very neat, and very dignified.
and that was the only bird shop i saw there the whole time.
i am now fully aware that i need to stop relying on memory and actually take down notes next time. if not for myself, at least for other travellers.
i love your hometown. =) hope you find it, and happy cny!
Found the mysterious "alley" after walking around for 2+ hours! Thought it was the side of the river near Jonker but later realised it wasnt. Found out that the the cafe with green signages was Discovery Cafe! Spoke to the owner, upon reading your description of the place, the helpful owner pointed me to walk in the correct direction, and i finally found the place! it's really obscure! Did u walk into the alley? There was a realllly beautiful back door surrounded by big huge roots and moss. It looked like the kind of door that if you enter, it leads u to Narnia, if you know what i mean. Fascinating. And found a spread of (dog) bones there too. ekks! took lots of photos there! Btw, the alley is located at lorong jawa :)
oh no, i didn't walk in! cos i was alone and it was really quiet there so i didn't think to venture deeper in. but yah, i get what you mean about narnia. even from the outside looking into the alley, it feels like it could be a passageway to some faraway magical place.
glad you found it and thanks for the address! ;)
