Perspective

When I was 10, celebrities were stars. Seriously famous, all pretending to be virginal or at least single. More importantly, they were all really old. Almost anyone is really old when you've existed a mere decade.

In my teenage years, older doesn't seem so old anymore. Celebrities around my age appeared in my radar. And you're like, oh okay, it's my generation.

I'm now 27 and my closest friends are 27 to 30-plus-a-little-bit. Fresh celebrities are now half our age. Random comments from our conversations include:

"I no longer know all the songs that are playing on the radio."

"How old is Britney again?"
"I don't know, around our age."

"Oh my god, she's born in the 1990s. That's disgusting."

To offer some perspective, here's a list:

Britney Spears - born 1981, age 28
Madonna - 1958, 51
Andy Lau - 1961, 48
Aaron Kwok - 1965, 44
Li Nanxing - 1964, 45
Zoe Tay - 1968, 41
Fann Wong - 1971, 38
Takeshi Kaneshiro - 1973, 36
Barbie Hsu - 1976, 33
Dee Hsu - 1978, 31
Jay Chou - 1979, 30
Vic Zhou - 1981, 28
Jolin Tsai - 1980, 29
Rainie Yang - 1984, 25
Lady Gaga - 1986, 23
Blake Lively - 1987, 22
Leighton Meester - 1986, 23
Robert Pattinson - 1986, 23
Kristen Stewart - 1990, 19
Taylor Momsen - 1993, 16

My jaw dropped after I worked out Andy Lau's age. That he's suddenly so freaking old means I've really gotten on in years as well. I mean, he was in his late 20s/ early 30s when I first knew about him. Now he's pushing 50! He still looks good, but 50 is 50.

I shall stop here. Why alarm myself further.
