Topshop opens in New York and its style advisers are in focus. I like how they were shot in the NYT slideshow.
Also, excerpt from article about them:
“We are the brand ambassadors in a way,” Ms. Caplan said. “Five girls out of 30 will all buy the same skirt in London, and we’ll never wear it the same way. We can all wear it on the same day and never know it. Someone will wear it as a top. Someone will wear it as a hat.”
What I wonder is this. How much of the purchases eventually become returns?
It's a tough job, telling people what they can wear. Humans are absurdly stubborn and difficult when it comes to things they think they can or cannot wear.
It is one thing to bring to them items that suit their preconceived ideas about their bodies and quite another to suggest new things you know would look great on them despite what they think. Battling that mindset requires much more than a sweet tongue as it feels like you're up against age-old sources of powerful resistance.
I like shopping with people who are open to suggestions or those who know their own mind well and merely want some comments. Worst are the ones who want suggestions but would never take them up. Shopping becomes such a drag then.
