A friend had a photo of a gorgeously stark and sleek bike on his Facebook (hate the new layout, by the way) that I could not stop marvelling at. It was captioned 'fixies' and so I got googling.
The term fixies refers to fixed gear bicycles ie. a bike with only one gear. Simply put, you cannot coast and must pedal if you want the bike to move, or when the bike is moving? Sounds suspiciously like you should prepare a few crash landings before getting skilled at this, especially since you can actually have a fixie without brakes.
Anyhow. There is too much technical literature on this and they all link to tonnes of other types of bikes so I didn't read it very thoroughly. Generally, I don't think I can afford a fixie so I shall stick to looking at photos. Cos the more I get it the more I'll want it.
There are tonnes of fixie blogs and flickr hits, which also means tonnes of lovely bikes and riders and accessories for both bikes and riders (there are some really cool messenger bags out there).
Samples of clean, streamlined fixies from Mission Bicycles in San Francisco.

You start to think, Ooh. I like the monochromatic look. And then you see something like that and you don't know what to think anymore.

The photo is from Girls On Bicycles!, a photo journal of, well, girls looking very cool with their amazing bikes.
Two words. I want.
